The 8th edition of the Nigerian Private University Games (NPUGA) officially commenced with a vibrant and energetic opening ceremony hosted at the Babcock University stadium.
Athletes from over 30 private universities across the country gathered in high spirits, proudly participating in a colourful march-past that showcased the diversity and unity of Nigeria’s student-athletes.
Representing the Vice Chancellor of Babcock University, Professor Philemon Amanze, the institution’s Senior Vice President for Academics, warmly welcomed all participants and officials.
In his remarks, he emphasized the broader significance of the Games, describing NPUGA as a platform that goes beyond competition.
According to him, it serves as a vital avenue for building unity, encouraging friendship, and promoting discipline, teamwork, and healthy rivalry among young people from diverse backgrounds.
He also pointed out the role of the Games in identifying and nurturing sporting talents who may one day represent Nigeria on national and international stages.
The atmosphere at the event was electric, filled with music, dancing, and enthusiastic cheers from students and supporters.
The celebration set the tone for what promises to be an exciting and competitive tournament.
Shortly after the opening ceremony, the Games got underway with an intense football match between the host institution, Babcock University, and Crawford University. Crawford dominated the first half, scoring two goals to gain an early lead. Babcock University managed to pull one back late in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome, as the match ended 2-1 in favour of Crawford.
With the competition now underway, expectations are high for a memorable tournament filled with outstanding performances, spirited contests, and the continued celebration of unity through sport.
